Catastrophic health expenditure in Benin: Extent, drivers, and policy implications

Large out-of-pocket spending on medical issues can expose households to catastrophic health expenditure, which result in poverty. This study aimed estimate the extent of expenditure among Benin and assess association between household characteristics. We used 2017 nationally representative survey for Benin, “Analyse Globale de la Vulnérabilité et Sécurité Alimentaire,” a logit model demographic socioeconomic The results suggested that 25.49% spent 40% their resources healthcare. Moreover, headed by women, poorest households, those living rural areas, widow, with children elderly members were identified as vulnerable groups require protection against expenditure. policy implication these is healthcare financing strategies should concentrate finding ways reduce both payments probability insurance under development an opportunity protect groups.
